One year ago, the last issue of smallformat magazine was published. We still have some copies of all issues (1/2005, 1-6/2006, 1-6/2007, 1-6/2008). If you are interested to buy some or all, this might be the last chance to do so. Just send me an e-mail.

Hello 2010 - what next for Super 8?, Entertenment ,

Belated Happy New Year to all our readers and apologies for the extended break in service but we're wrestling with some real arctic weather here in the UK.

So it's 2010 and yet another milestone, the 6th decade for the Super 8mm format. Go on count them... 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and now the 10's. So, with evolution being key to the continued success of our beloved small gauge format, we wondered what our readers think will happen next for Super 8.

Flicker want your films!, Entertenment ,

The Flicker Film Festival (North Carolina) is looking for films for their next show at the Cat's Cradle on January 26th, as well as right through the upcoming year.

If you don't know already, Flicker is a long-running, bi-monthly screening series dedicated to showing work that originated on film - and you can learn more at www.flickerfestival.com and find out about the screenings.

Anything shot on film and 15 minutes or under will be considered, and there's no entry fee. Submissions must be postmarked by January 20th for inclusion in the January 26th show.

The 8 fest returns to Toronto for its third year for three nights of screenings book-ended by a six-person group installation! This year will find the festival at a larger screening venue, Toronto’s Canadian Corps Headquarters (201 Niagara Street at King).

The 8 fest is North America’s only festival devoted to all forms of small-gauge film, including Super 8, 8mm, 9.5 and loops, shown in their original formats. It's horror madness with Super 8 My Brain, a night of spooky short films presented by the Cambridge Super 8 Group; freaky, funny and frightening films that will make you sleep with the light on!

The night is in two parts. They'll show spooky Super 8 shorts from all over the world together with Q&A's with some of the filmmakers. At the interval, special musical guest: Will Kevansa.

So get on down to The Portland Arms, Cambridge on Sunday the 7th of February for a night of zombie shorts.

Super 8 Films Wanted!

Super 8 Films are wanted for the University of Toronto Film Festival's annual Super 8 Circus. The first 20 submissions will be accepted for the screening on a first come first served basis. To register go to www.uoftfilmfest.ca and complete the online submission form and mark the appropriate place for the Super 8 Circus. Films should be 50-feet or less (i.e. one roll or less) and silent (no sound will be in the projection.) The films will be projected with live music accompaniment. We use the Pleasure Dome projector and an experienced projectionist. Previews on video are helpful for the musicians but not necessary.

Deadline to register: February 8, 5pm.

If you miss the deadline email rick.palidwor@utoronto.ca to see if space is still available.

Super 8 films should be delivered to the festival office no later than Monday March 8, 5pm. Make sure your film indicates the projection speed (18 or 24 fps). Video previews should be sent to us as early as possible. All materials will be returned.

The Super 8 Circus will take place on March 13th, 2010, at Hart House (University of Toronto) at a time to be determined.

Super 8 Loops Wanted

The University of Toronto Film Festival is seeking super 8 loops to be shown in Hart House throughout the day on March 13th. Site-specific loops are encouraged. Visit Hart House, explore the space and stake out some territory. Proposals should be sent to rick.palidwor@utoronto.ca

Selected artists will be responsible for setting up, running and tearing down their installations and must bring their own projector.

This weekend - 2010 United States Super 8 Film + Digital Video Festival, Entertenment ,

Watch the winning films and digital videos of the International U.S. Super 8 Film + Digital Video Festival, selected by a jury of filmmakers, students, and media professionals this weekend.

The festival, now in its 22nd year, will feature finalist works by independent filmmakers from the United States and around the world. A different program of films and videos will be offered each night.

Prize winners will be announced on the closing night of the festival, in a competition for $4000 in cash and prizes, along with the Audience Favorite Prize. 120 min.

All screenings will take place on February 19th - 21st, 2010 beginning at 7PM, in Voorhees Hall #105 at 71 Hamilton Street on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S.A.
